Bethany Center is recognized worldwide as a model of supportive housing that empowers residents with options and choices. Special praise has come to us through awards from Aging Services of California (ASC) and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA).
In 1997, Bethany received ASC’s annual Social Responsibility Award. The citation saluted Dan Fontes' "Salud!" mural as "a beautiful symbol of the dignity of older persons [and of] an organization that has embraced diversity and celebrated its potential to enrich the lives of everyone it touches."
In the same year, Bethany was honored by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) with its Innovation of the Year Award, one that recognizes originality and creativity in organizations around the country that serve America’s aging population.
In 1998, Bethany Center sponsored the making of a video entitled Salud! A Living Wall: Portrait of a Community (clip to go on YouTube) that details the creation of the mural. The video was selected for special showing at the 1998 Silver Images Festival held at the Chicago Arts Institute. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors also awarded this film a Certificate of Honor.
In 2001, AAHSA presented our Executive Director, Jerry Brown, with the Hobart Jackson Social Responsibility Award. He is cited as a champion of the cause of diversity on local, state, national and international levels.
Noteworthy are Jerry’s continued efforts to retain a multicultural staff
that can communicate with residents in seven languages, produce multicultural
celebrations and events, and issue written communications, including newsletters,
in Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. He also spearheaded a campaign to educate
AAHSA members about the needs of LGBT seniors.
Jerry continues to be an advocate for social justice at the local, state,
national and international levels.
quality first
In 2005 we received the Aging Services of California “Quality First Award” for our Corporate Compliance Program. Our board was one of the nation’s first participants in AAHSA’s Quality First which represents a covenant between aging service providers, consumers and government to improve our field and its image. By demonstrating outcomes that enhance quality and consumer satisfaction, Bethany Center and other award winners build public trust.
